The Research Triangle, By Neighborhood: Raleigh, Durham, Cary and Where to Stay in Between

A corner-by-corner guide to the Research Triangle for relocating professionals and extended stays — North Hills, Brier Creek, RTP, Cary, Durham, Chapel Hill, Wake Forest and the south side — matched to real Stay Furnished communities.

Meridian at North Hills, Raleigh

Charlotte gets the skyline photos. The Research Triangle gets the lab coats, the lanyards, and three universities that quietly reshuffle the world's talent every August. If your next thirty, sixty or ninety days route through Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill or the Park in the middle of them, the first thing to know is that "the Triangle" is less a place than a shape — three cities, a dozen towns, and one giant research campus holding the whole thing together. Where you land inside that shape decides your commute, your weeknights, and whether the stay feels like a layover or a life. Here's the lay of the land, corner by corner.

North Hills & Midtown Raleigh — for the person who wants everything within a ten-minute radius

North Hills is the Triangle's answer to a second downtown: offices, a real restaurant row, a grocery store you can walk to, and a Saturday morning farmers' market in the middle of it all. It's ten minutes up the Beltline from the Capitol and Fayetteville Street, ten minutes the other way from the office parks along Six Forks, and it never makes you choose between convenience and quiet. Meridian at North Hills puts you in the thick of it.

Brier Creek — for anyone splitting time between RDU, the Park and Raleigh proper

Brier Creek is the Triangle's great compromise, and we mean that as a compliment. It sits where I-540 meets US-70, which puts the airport under ten minutes away, Research Triangle Park fifteen, and downtown Raleigh twenty — so the consultant flying out every Thursday and the engineer badging into the Park every Monday can both call it home without either one losing. There's a full shopping and dining district built right in. We've placed guests here at Jamison at Brier Creek, The Exchange at Brier Creek and LC Brier Creek.

Research Triangle Park & Morrisville — for the badge that says IBM, Cisco, Biogen or Lenovo

The Park is the reason the region has its name: seven thousand acres of pine forest with some of the biggest names in tech and life sciences tucked inside it. Nobody actually lives in the Park, so the people who work there live on its edges, and Morrisville is the edge with the shortest drive — a town of lakes, greenways and a surprisingly good run of South Asian restaurants, sitting between RTP and the airport. Alta Davis is right on Davis Drive, the Park's main artery; Cortland Perimeter Park and Creekstone at RTP cover the same corridor.

Cary — for families, longer placements, and the SAS and Epic Games crowd

Cary is where a lot of relocating families decide to stop looking. It is consistently ranked among the safest cities its size in the country, the schools are a big part of why people move here, and it has its own major employers — SAS's campus and Epic Games' headquarters among them — so the commute is often a few minutes rather than a few highways. Downtown Cary has had a glow-up in the last few years, with a park, a new library and a real restaurant scene. We've placed guests at Bexley at Triangle Park, Lantower Weston Corners, Alta Wren and Bell Preston Reserve.

Downtown Durham — for the person who wants the Triangle's best food and a walk to work

Durham reinvented itself from tobacco town to the Triangle's culinary capital, and downtown is where you feel it most: the American Tobacco Campus, the Durham Bulls ballpark, the Performing Arts Center, and more James Beard nominations per block than anywhere else in the Carolinas. If your work is at Duke, Duke Health, or one of the tech firms that have moved into the old brick warehouses, this is the place to be on foot. Van Alen sits right downtown. Closer to Duke's campus and hospital, Trinity Commons at Erwin is on Erwin Road itself; on the south side near Southpoint, Heights at Meridian splits the difference between Durham and the Park.

Chapel Hill — for UNC, UNC Health, and anyone who wants a college town that acts like one

Chapel Hill is small on purpose. Franklin Street, the Carolina blue everything, a hospital system that draws people from across the state — and a town that still closes down for a basketball game. It's about twenty minutes from the Park and thirty from Raleigh, so it works best when your days are centered on the university or the medical center. Notting Hill and The Morgan at Chapel Hill are both here.

Wake Forest & the north — for a placement that trades a few highway minutes for a small-town main street

North of Raleigh, Wake Forest has a historic downtown, a seminary campus, and the kind of pace that makes a long assignment feel less like one. It's about twenty-five minutes to downtown Raleigh and a straight shot down Capital Boulevard or US-1. Bexley at Heritage is here, in the Heritage community with its own golf course and shopping.

South & east — for Clayton's pharma corridor, Garner, and the quieter side of Wake County

The Triangle's growth has pushed hard to the south and east. Clayton, in Johnston County, has become a life-sciences hub in its own right, with major pharmaceutical manufacturing campuses that pull in long project teams — Parkside Village and Stallings Mill are both in Clayton. On Raleigh's southeast side, Abberly Grove sits near the I-40 and I-440 interchange, convenient to WakeMed and downtown both. Further south, SOHO Apartments and Elevate Powell and Broad in Fuquay-Varina cover the US-401 corridor for anyone whose work points toward Holly Springs and the biomanufacturing campuses there.

Picking the right corner of the Triangle

The Triangle rewards people who think about the commute before the apartment. The distances aren't huge — nothing here is Atlanta — but I-40 at 5:15 on a Tuesday has humbled plenty of newcomers who assumed Raleigh and Durham were interchangeable. Pick the corner closest to where your days actually happen, then let the rest of the region be weekend territory: a Bulls game in Durham, a Saturday on Franklin Street, dinner in North Hills, and the coast two hours east when you need salt air.

Stay Furnished has been placing guests across the Triangle for more than a decade, with a guest services team in Raleigh that knows the difference between Cary and Apex without looking at a map. If you've got a relocation, a project team or a long assignment headed this way, tell us where the work is and we'll match you to a home that makes the commute a footnote. (And if you're still weighing corporate housing against a hotel or Airbnb for a stay this long, we broke that down here. Charlotte-bound instead? Here's the Charlotte version of this guide.)
